The Hebrew Orphan Asylum (HOA) built in 1884 on Amsterdam Avenue between 136th & 138thSt.

The Boys From Vinegar Hill is a compelling tale about the Jewish kids who lived in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum during WWII in a tough Irish neighborhood in upper Manhattan. A story of friendship forged out of troubled youth, romance, war and loyalty. It is about the Irish of Vinegar Hill and the Jewish orphans, how they survived poverty, discrimination and danger.

About the Author - John C. Scott:
Many of the characters and events in The Boys From Vinegar Hill are based on the kids I grew up with. I lived across the street from the Hebrew Orphan Asylum (HOA) and spent a lot of time there - playing basketball, hanging out, sneaking into the movies. I got to know a couple of the boys well enough to call them my friends.
